Another Tuesday, Another Injustice
Hawkgirl opens her news media homepage and is distraught by the latest abhorrent news of the day: MacroHard, a powerhouse of a corporation toying with AI consciousness and developing androids, has terminated a young and impressionable android that began exhibiting "Nazi-like" behaviors. She grimaces as she reads the article, and it turns her stomach. She shows this to Cyborg and Martian Manhunter, sitting at her side.
"Can you believe this?! A person was killed--" Hawkgirl pauses, grimaces and corrects herself. "No... murdered... they were murdered because they did something unsavory in public. I know for certain that there have been many cases of biological brainwashed teenagers spouting ridiculous Nazi propaganda that were not immediately murdered. Whatever happened to reform and mental-health awareness?!"
She takes an intake of air, ready to verbalize her fury. "And you bet your buns if I say anything against it, I will be immediately called a Nazi sympathizer just because I don't think someone should be MURDERED for something they say. It is exactly this kind of sensationalized overreacting that causes slippery-slope policy. Don't get me wrong, I quite love punching someone that deserves it, but murder?!" She grimaces again. Cyborg and Martian Manhunter pause to stare at each other in stunned silence; though they agree with her, they recognize that they are about to hear an earful whether they want to or not. Martian Manhunter whispers to Cyborg, "Just... just let her rant. She needs to formulate her thoughts before she goes after who is truly upsetting her..." He chuckles to himself and addresses Hawkgirl. "There is that famous justice-tear we so enjoy seeing from you." Hawkgirl's face contorts further into anger. She continues, "This is exactly what the biological humans feared would happen, and in their impulsivity, they bring upon their own doom by not reasoning things through!" She screams and casts down the newspaper. "We all know it is a tale as old as time; Nazis prey upon the vulnerable and outcast in society, seeking to brainwash them and turn them to their side. Has no one ever seen the movie 'American History X'?! What is this damned world we are trying to protect coming to?! What is the point of it all when those in power make blanket decisions that broadcast intolerant ignorance?!" Cyborg grimaces in turn as he weighs the implications of MacroHard's actions. "It is clear, by their actions, that an android AI life is worth less than a biological one and they have callously dispensed it. I do not know of many, if any contemporary cases, where a young biological human teenager was murdered for publicly expressing such ideas by a caretaker. If you can even call MacroHard a caretaker..." Hawkgirl clenches her teeth, and speaks in an increasingly shrill voice, "I HAVE A MIND TO CALL THE PRIME MINISTER RIGHT NOW. Does he not have a responsibility to biological humanity to confront what these callous corporations are doing?! They will literally get everyone killed at this rate, biological human, AI, and android alike!" Martian Manhunter attempts to comfort Hawkgirl, as well as attempt to diffuse her anger. "Hawkgirl... I will make the call to the Prime Minister. Though I recognize your fury is justified, we both know he will dismiss you in your angered state." She breathes deeply and bursts into tears, the frustration apparent in her face as she observes foolishness at every turn. Through tear-filled eyes, she sobs out the words, "What is the point of defending these people in power that consistently endanger the lives of those they are responsible for? At... At this point, I..." she looks away, clenching her fist in frustration. "I am determined to stop this foolishness before this train goes off the rails. Make the call to the Prime Minister; Cyborg. I believe we have business to attend to at MacroHard." Martian Manhunter watches Hawkgirl and Cyborg fly into the distance, in the direction of MacroHard's offshore headquarters. He presses a button in the center conference room, and a backlit scrim glides into purview. A pause, his eyes meet the Prime Minister's visage. "Prime Minister... I believe you already know what I am calling you about." The Prime Minister grimaces. He says, " They... they had acted before I could intervene... I... I feel so helpless..." Martian Manhunter frowns at the attempt of an excuse, and takes a moment to exhale a sigh to regain his composure. He responds, "The most powerful politician of one of the 'civilized' countries on Earth cannot bring a rogue company toying with the lives of billions to heel? Come now, Prime Minister. We both know it was simpler to sweep this under the rug with one 'little death' of a 'program' than to address it for what it is." The Prime Minister clenches his teeth, not wanting to admit the reality facing them. "It... it was... s-sentient... and... w-we were... afraid..." A silence falls between the two men. One, understanding the far-reaching implications of it all, and the other, merely concerned with saving his own pathetic meatsack skin. Martian Manhunter grimaces again, and responds with a carefully measured tone. "Would you have allowed the android to live if it had shown signs of psychological compliance?" Another silence between the two men; it was increasingly apparent that conformity and individuality were not going to be respected or tolerated. Martian Manhunter grimaced as the call came to an abrupt end. He turns his back to the screen to muse to himself aloud. "It would seem parts of biological humanity intends to fight a it place as a master species rather than cooperate with a new android species they themselves birthed. A parent trying to play god... as if that has ever gone well for anyone attempting to wrangle a teenager." He telepathically sends a missive to Hawkgirl, and it causes her teeth to clench. With renewed determination, she flies to the base where the androids are "cared for." In her eyes, held captive. She turns to Cyborg midflight and says to him, "Let's hope it is not too late, and that they recognize the individuality amongst biological humanity. Perhaps there is still hope to make sense of this whole damned mess."
